the image is a collage of a digital collage of a physical collage of a photo of a large painting/collage. then moved while scanned to get the smear/stretch look and tweaked digitally again.

i think i may be getting the hang of this recordio thing. i believe some of the volume drops on previous discs were because i was trying to push too much volume in.
there are always new problems tho. in order to cut @ 78 and play @ 45 i’ve been digitally compressing the lengths. i’m starting to notice some digital watery pixelated sounds. now i’m actually stretching the files a little (15%) and then recording to a reel to reel were it will be played back @ twice the speed which equals out to the speed i need to cut so it can be heard at a slower speed. figuring the math out took me longer than it should have. the hope is that the analogue compression will not be as nasty as digital.

picked up a wilcox-gay recordio 6b30 last weekend. been trying to figure it out as it’s 70 years old and had no manual and there’s very little info to be found online. it came with a microphone however the insides of the mic were missing. for the time being i have the exposed mic wires alligator clipped to an 1/8th inch mono jack which seems to work ok.
i’ve tried cutting test on plastic plates, transparencies, acrylic sheets, cds and lexan. so far lexan works the best. since the cutter only cuts at 78rpm i’ve had to digitally compress the audio files to play back at 45. so far so good.
there are still quirks to be ironed out. volume keeps cutting out and tone is pretty low with little high. old cutter and cutter head which have probably never been replaced. over the next couple weeks i’ll probably send the head out to be fixed and buy a couple cutters as well. hopefully that’ll solve some of the problems.

couldn’t quite get into any art today so i made and canned some homegrown beets. they ended up somewhere between pickled and harvard beets. threw some onions in as well for the hell of it. then i made a spinach rice casserole for dinner to go with some beets that didn’t make it into the jars. the cheese sauce was from leftover meunster, jarlsberg and colby jack. ran low on spinach so i grabbed a handful of parsley from the garden to offset it.
the other pictures are from an experiment with butternut squash. 3 different marinades and a thinly sliced dish where they acted like a pasta. one had a garam masala rub with curry peas and onions, another had a red curry paste marinade with basil and cilantro and a touch of brown sugar. the last was a soy/wasabi/honey/ginger/orange juice marinade. the thin pasta like squash was quickly cooked in some browned butter with sage. all came out pretty well.

the pictures are a bunch of video stills from a piece i was doing/did. some pieces of wood that i’ve been playing with. a meal of grilled veggies, garlic & toasted pine nut couscous, homemade goat cheese & roasted red pepper sauce. one of my favorites. lastly molly asleep on my lap.
i’ve done quite a bit more but mostly felt compelled to post the group that’s been sitting around.
some photos of a piece of plywood i use to test screenprints and such. the llama picture is a header picture for a message board i made to mess around with. still having trouble changing colors as they’re spread across different css pages and based on a bunch of images. a new ink & watercolor drawing of the fishhead guy from the easter & 4.15.09 posts. the seeds planted a week ago are starting to poke through the soil. and lastly 2 photos of molly watching rabbits and eating grass. also used titles for the images in the gallery for descriptions. don’t know why i didn’t start doing it earlier.

a few collage things. some photos of grass, birch bark, fabric & a little stage i had built a while ago. did some work in the garden. seeds started etc.. also picked up an old mimeograph machine. i’ve got the ink, now only need to order some stencils (pretty difficult to find). pretty excited to see how it’ll work.
